What sports opportunities exist for high schoolers beyond the team?

Playing on a school team is only one way into sports for high schoolers. You can also coach younger kids, referee, work at camps, keep stats and help run local leagues.

Summer sports camps range from skill clinics to camps run by college coaches. Many towns need teen referees and umpires for youth leagues, and parks departments hire junior counselors and assistant coaches. Sports medicine and athletic training programs give a look at the health side of the game.

How do you choose a sports camp or program?

Be clear about why you are going. A camp to sharpen skills, a camp to meet college coaches and a camp for fun are different things at different prices. Ask about the coach-to-athlete ratio, how much time is actual training, and the safety and concussion policies. For refereeing or coaching roles, check the minimum age and what training comes first. Be wary of paying for promises of exposure that no one can guarantee.

How can you get more out of sports this month?

  1. Keep a training log: what you did, how it felt, and one thing to fix next time.
  2. Ask your local youth league whether they train teen referees, and sign up for the next session.
  3. Volunteer to help coach a younger team for a season.
  4. Film one of your games or practices and review it with a coach or teammate.
  5. Help run a tournament or fundraiser for your team, from the schedule to the cleanup.
