How can high schoolers learn about real estate?

Real estate is about land and buildings: buying, selling, renting, building and managing the places people live and work.

There are fewer programs aimed at teens than in other fields, but you can find real estate and finance summer programs at some colleges, business clubs like DECA, housing nonprofits that take teen volunteers, and online courses on how mortgages, rent and property value work. Shadowing an agent, property manager or appraiser for a day can show you what the jobs actually look like.

What should you look for in a real estate program?

Pick programs that teach the math and the people side together: how a deal is priced, what a lease says, and how to talk with buyers and tenants. Be very careful with courses that promise quick wealth or push teens toward investing schemes. Good programs are clear that most real estate work, like holding a license, comes later as an adult. Compare cost and format, and look for free resources from libraries and nonprofits first.

How can you start exploring real estate this month?

  1. Track five homes for sale near you for a month. Note the price, size, location and how long each takes to sell.
  2. Work out the monthly cost of a home with a free online mortgage calculator, then compare it with local rents.
  3. Volunteer with a housing nonprofit on a build or repair day if they accept teen helpers.
  4. Interview a real estate agent or landlord about the hardest part of their job.
  5. Read a sample lease and write a plain-language summary of what a tenant agrees to.
