What marketing opportunities exist for high schoolers?
Marketing is about understanding people and getting the right message to them. High schoolers can practice it through DECA, business summer programs, school events and real work for local businesses.
DECA's competitive events include many marketing categories, from product promotion to advertising campaigns. Online courses cover social media, branding and basic analytics. Some of the best experience comes from promoting something real: a club fundraiser, a school play or a family business.
How do you choose a marketing program or competition?
Look for programs where you plan and run a campaign with a clear goal, then study the results. Ask whether you work with real clients or case studies, and who gives feedback. Compare cost, schedule and format. Be skeptical of courses promising to make you an influencer; the core skills are research, writing, design and measuring what works.
How can you practice marketing this month?
- Promote one school event and compare turnout with the last time it ran.
- Interview five people in your target audience and write down the words they use.
- Rewrite a local business's website headline and explain why yours is clearer.
- Make two versions of one poster or post and see which gets more response.
- Join DECA and look at the marketing events you could enter.
Where Nextreks fits
Campaign plans, before-and-after results and the materials you made belong in your Nextreks portfolio, which you control. Marketing leans on durable skills like communication and curiosity about other people, both things Nextreks Challenges help you practice.
Programs in Explore are run by other organizations. Nextreks lists them but does not run or guarantee them.
