What cybersecurity programs and competitions are there for high schoolers?

Cybersecurity is one of the most hands-on technical fields a high schooler can try. There are competitions like CyberPatriot and picoCTF, summer cyber camps, school clubs and free online practice platforms.

CyberPatriot teams find and fix security problems on virtual computers. picoCTF, from Carnegie Mellon University, is a capture-the-flag contest with puzzles in cryptography, web security and forensics. Learning Linux, networking and some programming builds the foundation for all of it. The field is broad, too: some people defend networks, some study attacks, and others write policy or teach people how to stay safe online.

How do you choose a cybersecurity program?

Look for programs where you practice in safe lab environments with clear rules about ethics and the law. Ask which tools and background are expected. Many good options are free, so a paid camp should offer more mentoring. One rule never changes: only test systems you own or have written permission to test.

How can you start in cybersecurity this month?

  1. Try practice capture-the-flag puzzles online and keep notes on each solution.
  2. Set up a Linux virtual machine and learn the basic commands.
  3. Start or join a cyber club and look into forming a CyberPatriot team.
  4. With permission, check your family's home network: router password, updates and a guest network.
  5. Learn how phishing works and teach a short session for younger students.

Where Nextreks fits

Write-ups of puzzles you solved, lab notes and club work can go in your Nextreks portfolio, private by default. Cybersecurity uses durable skills like persistence and integrity, and explaining risks to people who are not technical is communication.

Programs in Explore are run by other organizations. Nextreks lists them but does not run or guarantee them.
