What engineering and aerospace programs are there for high schoolers?
High schoolers into engineering and aerospace can design, build and test real machines before college. Options include robotics teams, rocketry and drone clubs, engineering summer programs, science fairs and the Civil Air Patrol cadet program.
FIRST Robotics Competition teams build a large robot each season with adult mentors. The American Rocketry Challenge has student teams design and launch model rockets to hit set targets. Science fairs that lead to Regeneron ISEF include engineering categories, and many colleges run summer engineering programs for high schoolers.
How do you pick an engineering program?
Look for hands-on design and build time, real tools, and a project you finish and test. Ask about the mentor-to-student ratio and whether students do the work or mostly watch. Robotics teams and clubs often cost less than summer programs but ask for more hours each week. Check for extra costs like parts and travel to competitions.
How can you start engineering this month?
- Build something simple, like a bottle rocket, glider or popsicle-stick bridge, then improve one part and test again.
- Join or start a robotics, rocketry or engineering club.
- Take a free online course in basic CAD and design one part you could 3D print.
- Take apart a broken appliance and sketch how it works.
- Keep an engineering notebook with dates, sketches, tests and what you changed.
Where Nextreks fits
Notebooks, CAD files, test videos and competition results all fit in your Nextreks portfolio, private by default. Engineering projects also show durable skills like problem solving, collaboration and persistence after a test goes badly, which Nextreks Challenges help you practice.
Programs in Explore are run by other organizations. Nextreks lists them but does not run or guarantee them.
